Speculation FOX is censoring YouTube

There is a flurry of vlogging going on regarding the Chris Wallace interview with former president Bill Clinton. Speculation is that FOX is controlling the output of the vlogs by deleting those which present the video as a pro-Clinton story, while those which make it sound like FOX's Wallace made Clinton look bad or Clinton did so himself are remaining.

Hard to say, but a few things are clear: the video is one of the most popular ever on YouTube, and lots of posts are being deleted. You decide for yourself.

(strong language in some of these)

Some of the responses are a bit unprofessional and immature, but it is vlogging, so I suppose one can expect that. Other threads on the matter require a bit of hunting down. One wonders though, if they will still be available much longer...

The initial video contains the most info on the idea.

When I first searched YouTube for the Clinton interview, this was all I got....

Bill Clinton Gone Mad!!!

This is just a preview of his interview to come up on Fox News Sunday. WHAT A LIAR! "Nobody knew Al Qaeda existed!" What kind of B.S. is that? Chris Wallace shot that down REAL quick! He STILL cannot stop lying even now!

Careful that phrase isn't taken out of context. Clinton's comment was that nobody knew Al-Qaeda existed in 1993 when the US was involved in Somalia. Though some now speculate Al-Qaeda operatives may have been involved in the "Black Hawk Down" incident during the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, that connection has not been confirmed. Moreover, it would have been impossible at that time to know the full extent of Al-Qaeda's future operations, particularly the attacks on US territory. In fact, EVEN IF that were the organization's first operation, how was the military or intelligence agencies to know it was not the Somali warlords? That was the most imminent threat - by a long shot - at that time.
Careful that we do not condemn someone over intelligence gathered after the fact.

Maybe it has something to do with people posting copyrighted material? Ya think?

ComSen, if they were truly concerned with taking down copyrighted material, they would be taking down ALL of the interview clips, not selectively taking down some and leaving the ones that present Clinton in a bad light.

Sure, copyright might be a problem, it might also simply be personal desire to frame the issue a certain way by people able to delete. It is not necessarily FOX with an agenda.

I posted this because increasingly the notion that our media has failed is a real debate, and with the net-neutrality argument (those are two different links, btw), things like this are important. If we are concerned that corporations are controlling content on the one truly free press that remains available to us (and I'm talking the world, not the U.S.— the problem of media failure is not ours alone to reckon by any stretch) now, we should be far more concerned if we hand deregulated infrastructure to the major cable companies.

The time to examine this stuff is now, not after we scratch our heads and wonder what happened to the internet's autonomy.

Also, as exhibited here on the Vine, speculation is often treated as the truth.

The Internet we all enjoy should be protected (and expanded). Special interests from FOX to the Government of China are whittling away at these freedoms every day. I urge everyone to look into non-profits like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and others doing similar work to stave off the onslaught.

This was a very interesting clip, thanks very much. Here is what I have noticed so far. It appears as if the posts on YouTube that were FULL LENGTH clips of the Fox interview of Clinton were being pulled at the request of Fox News. In other words, IF YOU LET THE INTERVIEW SPEAK FOR ITSELF FOX COMES OFF BAD. But I imagine that the real grounds for their wanting it deleted is that it would be a copyright infringement and all of that traffic that they'd like to go to their site is going to YouTube instead to get the straight story.

Other clips and postings claim that YouTube is going to be bought by News Corp., the parent corporation of Fox, which seems plausible - though probably not directly related to this incident.

I think the idea of the same company owning fox ending up owning a social networking video based site containing entirely user driven content (other then their own ads and such) is HILARIOUS. They would either drive it into the ground, or it would end up causing a lot of trouble for FOX, with it's whole "post stuff like it IS instead of what someone might WANT it shown" idea of spreading videos.

Have to agree. FOX is to YouTube what oil is to water. However, if you view it like an acquisition to shut down "competition," it makes great sense. One would hope that isn't what happens. It's possible I suppose that the thing could continue as a forum for those catering to FOX's political spectrum and the more liberal user base might just drop off the twig as their posts are forced down the chain or worse, deleted.

I don't know what's going on with this thing today, but we have to at least all find some common ground on a maybe broader goal/desire, and I hope it is that we very much want to be able to say and do whatever we wish as we have always been able to; right or left, no matter.

youtube is at a point now that i don't think it can be killed. if it's bought and basically changes into something where the users don't feel free to say/post what they want, another site will end up taking it's place, there are other smaller sites similar to youtube already trying to get users, although none with as much of a community feel it seems...but change is inevitable..who knows what lay ahead....

Very true. We have no idea where things will go, but the net needs to stay the "open platform" that it is, that much is certain.

YouTube is a real Content Nation, similar to file sharing systems in that once you have a crowd that taps into this way of sharing content it tends to seek whatever venue supports their interests. Still, there are enthusiasts who care about who's controlling things and enthusiasts who don't, so you can expect these services to be bought and to be co-opted over time.

I know, tragic. If only there were some other way to make it available for viewers... something that works with YouTube, Yahoo!, Google Video, incorporates BitTorrent to minimize those bandwidth issues, and could actually use the support. But where would we find something like that?

        Haha Territan.

Looks interesting, but I'll have to read through the site more. It looks like it is something just starting that may evolve into more substantial fare?

Indeed, it is very new. It's still essentially in beta, but what I've seen of Democracy so far I like very much, hence the suggestion. It represents an actual attempt to democratize the media distribution system, much the same way that YouTube is apparently trying not to. And the more people use it, the better supported it will be given that that's how BitTorrent works.

And besides, anything that carries feeds of Adult Swim and French Maid TV can't be all bad, can it?

Issues of bandwidth, yes, most likely, and of copyright. YouTube is trying to avoid the fate of KaZaa and other file sharing services that got too cocky about copyrighted materials.
